Renato Hughes Jr., charged with the murder of his two childhood friends, never fired the shots that struck them in the back when the three went to a home in rural Lake County in search of marijuana.

Whether what happened that night was a drug deal gone bad or a botched home burglary is unclear. But this much both the defense and prosecution agree on: The person who pulled the trigger was the homeowner, Shannon Edmonds.

Hughes, however, was the one on trial Thursday for murder under an unusual legal doctrine in a case that his defense attorney's opening statement cast as having as much to do with his race as with the shootings.
